Research Centre for Coastal Zone, Estuary and Waterway Management
Description: The Coastal CRC's mission is to provide decision-making
tools and knowledge necessary for the effective management and ecosystem
health of Australia's coastal zone, estuaries and waterways. The goal
is to bridge the gaps between science, the community and policy making
organizations. The Coastal CRC will carry out quality science within
five interlinked themes in management study areas using participatory
approaches with stakeholders. The Centre is also carrying out a National
Estuary Audit involving an assessment on the condition of more than
900 estuaries around Australia. The Coastal CRC is a collaborative joint
venture between the federal and Queensland state government, and other
leading scientific and coastal management organizations. Keywords: Estuaries;

- Institute
of Marine Sciences (CSIC) Description:
The Institute of Marine Sciences was established at the year 1951. The
main objective is the multidisciplinary reasearch of the sea, through
research projects dealing with the ecosystem and marine environment.
The Institute, with about 100 researchers, is one of the most important
Centres devoted to the marine research of the Mediterranean region.
Keywords: marine geology; physical oceanography; marine biology; fisheries.
Country: Spain.
- Baltic
Sea Research Institute Warnemuende (in German
and English) Description: The Baltic Sea is a semi-enclosed brackish
water ecosystem where natural processes and the effects of human activities
can be studied particularly well. In order to understand the functioning
of the system and to identify anthropogenic effects, the IOW conducts
basic research, which comprises field campaigns, modelling and laboratory
experiments. The interaction of physical, chemical, biological and geological
processes in the system of the Baltic requires an interdisciplinary
approach which is an important feature of the IOW research programme.
