An Introduction to Integrated Coastal Area Management - On Line.

The target audience for the formal course includes decision-makers at local, provincial or national level who may wish to acquire or refresh a basic understanding of ICAM principles, as well as undergraduate or postgraduate students of environmental management, coastal engineering, or environmental law, or any transdisciplinary program of study, or anyone with an interest in Integrated Coastal Management. While the focus is South African, the course is available globally via the medium of the Internet, with support through CD-ROM available upon request. SA-ISISlearn is a web based Learning Resource developed by the International Ocean Institute Regional Operational Centre at the University of the Western Cape (IOI-SA).

North America

Summer Institute in Coastal Management University of Rhode Island Coastal Resources Center (CRC)

The Summer Institute in Coastal Management is a month-long, intensive training for coastal management professionals given by Coastal Resources Center (CRC) every two years. Participants and instructors from all over the world attend the sessions, bringing a wealth of real-life experience upon which this hands-on, practical training can draw. Participants learn tools and techniques which aid them in successfully handling the multifaceted challenges found when dealing with the coast, be it as a policymaker, scientist, community organizer or coastal dweller.

Institute alumni, some of whom hold key positions in public and private-sector organizations, form a worldwide communication network of coastal professionals. Examples of companies and sponsoring organizations involved with the Summer Institute include the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), the Universities of the Philippines and the West Indies, and nongovernmental organizations such as Conservation International (CI) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

Comprehensive hands-on training program including a one-week long field work in addition to dynamic in-class teaching, targeted at professionals holding mid-managerial positions in their central governments and being responsible for planning and execution of programs or projects on coastal and marine issues. The other groups of interest are employees of coastal municipalities, non-governmental environmental organisations, universities and research centres.

Diploma Course on Coastal Zone Management

The Centro Universitario de la Costa Sur of the University of Guadalajara invites interested participants to the 4th International Diploma Course on
Coastal Zone Management to be held on 4-23 November 2002 in Jalisco, Mexico. The objectives of the course include: giving a background in coastal environment and the complexities of coastal zone uses; training in working in multidisciplinary teams; providing basic information on integrated coastal zone management and sustainable development; and developing analytical skills to identify and diagnose problems.
