The Coastal Guide

The Coastal Guide is a service for professionals in coastal conservation, management, planning and research, especially in Europe and the Mediterranean produced by the European Union for Coastal Conservation (EUCC). Mission: Assist professionals in finding and accessing the best available information. The Coastal Guide is sponsored by EUCC's Information Programme and indirectly by the Nationale Postcode Loterij and Stichting DOEN, the Netherlands and the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature management and Fisheries. North West Coastal Forum

Description: The North West Coastal Forum is a multi-agency not-for-profit partnership bringing together stakeholders from the public, private and voluntary sectors and working to promote and deliver integrated management for the coastal areas of North West England to ensure their long-term sustainability. The Forum is unique in England, being the only coastal forum with boundaries coinciding with those of the Regional Development Agency and Regional Assembly, and has been promoted as a model of good practice in the UK. UK ICZM Stocktake Report

under the EU Integrated Coastal Zone Management approach (called a recommendation) released in April 2004. The recommendation asks European Member States to carry out a national stocktake of legislation, institutions and stakeholders involved in the management of the coastal zone and then to develop national strategies to deliver ICZM based on this information. The UK is the first member state to have completed its stocktake.

The Blue Flag Campaign

Description: The Blue Flag Campaign is an award scheme that seeks to reword local government and its partners for providing safe and clean beaches and marinas.The award, the Blue Flag itself, is given annually to beaches and marinas that satisfy a number of essential criteria; eg. the sustainable use of coastal resource, awarness of ICZM, water quality.

Dorset Coast Forum

Description: The Dorset Coast Forum was established in 1995 to look at the long-term strategic issues facing the Dorset coast. The overriding aim of the Forum is to promote a sustainable approach to the management, use and development of Dorset's coastal zone, which will ensure that its inherent natural and cultural qualities are maintained and enhanced for the benefit of future generations.A strategy is being prepared on behalf of the Dorset Coast Forum. It will set out the future of the coast, covering the coastline and inshore seas from Lyme Regis to Christchurch. As the first part of the strategy 15 topic papers on activities along the Dorset coast have been produced. The purpose of these documents is to encourage dialogue and consultation in order to produce a draft strategy based on consensus.

  ThamesWeb

Website of the Thames Estuary Partnership which provides an "umbrella" body to assist with the co-ordination of action and projects across the wide range of organisations and sectors involved on the estuary. To aid the co-ordinaton of activities the Partnership is in the process of establishing a range of action groups to drive forward partnership work on specific issues. [Ed: these estuary by estuary UK sites provide really valuable CZM resources - Thamesweb is a great example of the breed]
 

Severn Estuary Strategy

The Severn Estuary (Mor Hafren in Welsh) is one of Britain's largest estuaries spanning English and Welsh coastlines and, with the second highest tidal range in the world, is one of the most dynamic. A large proportion of the Estuary is designated under the International Ramsar Convention and is a SPA (Special Protection Area) under European Conservation Directives. Established in 1995 the SES, whilst attempting to follow international ICM (integrated Coastal Management ) principles, aims to:

  • Improve communication, understanding and co-operation between agencies, users and local people.
  • Provide opportunities for wide ranging community involvement.
  • Co-ordinate and monitor implementation of plans within the Estuary.
  • Establish a permanent management group to include and interact with local, regional and national policy proces

Firth of Clyde Forum

Moray Firth Partnership

The Moray Firth Partnership is a voluntary organisation made up of representatives or partners from industry, the local authorities, conservation bodies, recreational users, local residents and many others, all with an interest in the future well-being of the Moray Firth. The Partnership focuses on the coast and sea from Duncansby Head in Caithness to Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire. Its overall aim is to help people to find ways of working together to safeguard the Moray Firths natural, economic and social resources, now and for future generations.


 

Essex Estuaries Initiative (UK)
The Essex Estuaries have been recognized nationally and internationally as an important winter feeding area and summer breeding zone for migratory bird. As a European Marine Site, it is part of the EU “Natura 2000” network. The Essex Estuaries Initiative is not an organisation. Rather it is a proactive network to facilitate co-ordination and co-operation between organisations responsible for coastal management. There are many organisations involved - in the Essex Estuaries there are 14 statutory authorities directly responsible for the management of the coast and many user as well as government departments.

 

The Duddon Estuary Partnership (UK)
The Duddon Estuary Partnership was established in 1992 at a time when central and local government, as well as conservation bodies, were recognising the need for a new approach to the management of the Coastal Zone. A Steering Group of officers was formed from Cumbria County Council, Barrow Borough Council, Copeland Borough Council, South Lakeland District Council, the Lake District National Park Authority and English Nature together with a working group of the same authorities.

 

Tay Estuary Forum

The Tay Estuary Forum is a voluntary partnership which was formed in late 1997 to help promote a sustainable, integrated and co-ordinated approach towards management and use of the Firth of Tay and local coastline. The Forum will co-ordinate existing expertise towards the development of a management strategy for the coastal zone, to help protect the Firth's natural heritage and resources for future generations.

Planificacion y Gestion De Areas Lirorales

Integrated cooperation on the development of sustainable tourism and recreation in the Wadden Sea area

Description: The project area covers almost 10 000 square km along the Danish, German and Dutch coasts, corresponding to the regions of Ribe, Sønderjyllands, Schleswig-Holstein, Groningen, Friesland and Noord-Holland. It is the largest wetland of importance for nature conservation in the European Union. The resident population is relatively low, but increases considerably in the high season with tourists, who make a substantial contribution to the regional economy.

Implementing alternativestrategies in Irish beach and dune management: involvement in sustainable coastal development.

Description: The project concerns a dozen coastal dune sites in the Counties of Down (UK) and Donegal (IRL) which are of great natural and scenic interest and internationally renowned. In recent years, tourism and rural development have increased pressure on these sites and the trend could worsen. The authorities have recognised the need for management plans to handle this development in a sustainable way. The coastal research group responsible for the project will aim to involve local communities in the conception and implementation of coastal management plans and projects.

Standing Conference on Problems Associated with the Coastline (SCOPAC)

Description: To promote sustainable shoreline management, and to facilitate the duties and responsibilities of local authorities and other organisations managing the coastal zone of central southern England by: * Securing a consensus view on regional strategic and sustainability objectives and their means of delivery; * Effecting consultation, co-operation and co-ordination between member organisations on issues of common concern * Promoting, co-ordinating and undertaking research to increase understanding and improve management of the regional shoreline environment; * Actively representing the interests of member organisations in the development of national and supranational policies and initiatives relating to shoreline management; * Increasing awareness of the need to deliver national and international statutory obligations; and * Providing a forum for communication of experience and best practice Acting as a formal consultee on central government policy and guidance.

Programme for integrated coastal zone management in the Cyclades.

Description: The project concerns nine local communities and three municipalities of the Cyclades archipelago, with a population of 29 425, covering a sea area of 773 008 square km. Tourism in the Cyclades is growing very fast and affecting both the natural and built-up environments. The existing organisational structures and institutional machinery are not adapted to the needs of integrated management. The project intends to promote cooperation between the various island communities on matters of immediate concern (water resources, energy, waste management, regional and environmental planning, conservation of nature and the countryside).
